Cast glass using the lost wax method
Why glass?
I love casting in glass because of the contrasts it embodies in the finished piece: it is strong yet fragile, beautiful yet imperfect, enduring yet easily fractured. Cast glass demands technical rigour but yields art that glows with life and movement as the viewer moves in relation to it.
Why do I make what I make?
I aim to show beauty in familiar objects and forms, and to achieve this through simplicity of shape, colour, and movement. The cast glass continually changes with the light and our perspective, inviting us to look again, examine, and discover new beauty within everyday things.
Ribbons
I love ribbon not only because of the graceful forms it can take, but also because it transports us to life’s joyful moments: gifts, special occasions, and celebrations.
While difficult to cast glass in long, slender, smooth forms, creating ribbons in cast glass strengthens the metaphor for life and
joy: the process can be challenging yet gratifying, with the end result glowing yet delicate, beautiful yet imperfect, vibrant yet breakable.
The pieces are meant to engage the viewer with their joyful associations, simplicity, and delicate strength.
Symbols
There are so many beautiful shapes and symbols that are all the more beautiful because they represent complex concepts or functions: a musical note, the infinity symbol, the treble clef, pi…
The mobius loop, for example, differs from a typical loop in that there is no inside or outside. The inside surface curves around to become the outside, and then the outside surface curves back around to become the inside again.
